Land of the Elements
The Rise and fall of Zangretor the Corrupter. Goddess of free will.
In the early time when the first gods created the races of Solestra, something was missing in them. They would only follow commands. Never making decisions on their own. The father tree talked to the moon goddess and together they created Zangretor, Frulannan, and Carrath. Zangretor would be the Partner to the father tree and the vessel through which the many races would have free will. Frulannan would be the goddess of enlightenment a guiding force for the races to achieve happiness. Carrath was created to balance Frulannan. Carrath would be master of the dark places. In both Solestra and the hearts of the races.
Zangretor for so long was the most free, wild of all the gods. She would never follow the rules. Always helping mortals and almost exclusively walking among the mortals. All of that changed when Carrath began his tainting of the races. When Carrath began to taint the races of Solestra into daemons it began to affect Zangretor as well. She felt Carrath’s taint as a removal of free will. He was taking their choice to do right away. Zangretor was how the other gods found out Carrath’s plans.
But Zangretor didn’t tell the other gods the truth about Carrath’s taint. That through those infected Zangretor herself became infected. Once Carrath was defeated Zangretor withdrew from the world. Hoping to remove the taint from herself. For years she labored hard to remove the taint, all the while the taint grew inside her slowly, more and more. Then one day Zangretor gave in. She succumbed to the taint of Carrath and began her final fall.
She rebelled. She felt the circle of life took choice from the mortals. And so she created the undead. Not the returned like the true necromancers. She bound spirits to rotting forms these spirits were angry and wished for nothing more than to make the living join them. Zangretor made them this way. For in undeath all mortals would escape the circle of life. In Marrow where her first temple was made she drew followers unto her. She made her most loyal followers into the Litches. The most powerful of the undead. Unbound not only to the cycle of life but unbound to one element. These Litches were generals in the war of corruption. Leading the undead hordes in battle. One of each race, all bound into service to Zangretor.
The war was devastating. No races were safe. The gruffs, whose homeland Zangretor was located had the worst. Retreating to Aldef and the Ironwick mountains if they could. The humans dispatched all the legions, the Icarians gathered in the nomad tribes. The Ugway held a council of all their territories. All the races contributed but they were not coordinated. Finally the orchillians called the representatives of all the races. This was the unofficial fist council meeting. Through this meeting the first coordinated attack was planned. The human legions created the backbone of troops, the felinities created the weapons of war, the Ugway provided the strongest mages, the chameloids provided the logistics and guerrilla units, the gruffs helped the humans with troops who had seen the undead on the field.
The fight was not easy. But finally the last stand was held by the Litches, what undead they still had and Zangretor herself at her temple. And that’s when It happened. The cataclysm. The other gods watched as Zangretor took it upon herself to teach mortals the ultimate lesson. She would unleash her full goddess power and convert all of mortality to undead. But father tree couldn’t allow that. Like Carrath before her, Father tree knew Zangretor needed to be stopped. As the Litches made their last stand the father tree, along with the fire twins, and Frulannan assaulted the temple. Finally breaking in Frulannan tried to reason with Zangretor.
The twins disagreed with this but father tree wanted to give her a chance at enlightenment. Then, Palzyne struck. Having waited till Zangretor was distracted he focused his light upon her and those that served her. He scorched the land the undead inhabited. He burnt every living and undead thing including the gods. The twins saved Frulannan and The father tree, but they could not protect Zangretor. In her death throws she cursed the land.
In the years that followed the four decreed that no more could the gods take direct action. That the gods had their chance and this was their third failure. No more would be tolerated.
And so that is the story of Zangretor rise and fall. And the story of the great cataclysm and the creation of the desolation region of the marrow.
